Bone and tissue grafts have many uses in the dental aspect. Bone grafting procedures are used for reconstructive purposes, supporting implant osseointegration (bone fusing to implant), as well as restoring or replacing one or many teeth. With so many advances in dental technology, these procedures are done quickly, and healing is much easier than in the past.
Bone Graft
Bone grafts are most commonly used for replacing bone that has been lost due to gum disease. Also, untreated extractions and a prolonged period of denture use can cause significant wear on bone. Sometimes bone loss occurs during an extraction, where roots are difficult to remove, and often bone resorbs (dissolves) when we are not utilizing it.

This provides support and creates a healthier bone mass, becoming a foundation for implants or other teeth restorations. Once bone is placed in a site, a membrane blanket is placed on top of the graft to protect it and to ensure that the tissue healing over does not disrupt the new bone.

Depending on the specific case and patient, Dr. Koeppel will choose between three types of bone source. The first is Autogenous, which is bone taken from another area of the patient and placed in the jawbone. The second is Allograft, synthetic bone or bone from a bone bank. The last type of bone graft is Xenograft, this is usually bovine bone.
Gum Tissue Grafts
Gum grafts are usually used for treating recession or replacing lost tissue around the tops of teeth. Sometimes tissue grafts are needed to augment the tissue for socket grafts, and replacing infected or traumatized tissue due to disease and infection. Like bone grafts, tissue grafts also fall into three categories. The first being Autogenous, which is harvested tissue from the roof of the mouth. The second being collagen membranes that are truly optimized for ridge augmentation. The last is an Allograft tissue matrix, which processes high regenerative properties. This is ideal for wound stabilization and covering block grafts.
