Sinus Augmentation

Sinus Augmentations, or sinus lifts as they are more commonly referred to, are performed to increase the amount of bone to place implants to replace top teeth (upper arch). This procedure provides a necessary foundation for the implants. Many patients that were not candidates for implants in the past due to bone loss can now have implants to aid in chewing, speech and aesthetics.

The key to dental implant success is having adequate bone to support the implant. There are two main types of sinus lifts: lateral and vertical. The type of sinus augmentation that is necessary will depend on the amount of bone that has melted away. If there is enough bone to stabilize the implant, a vertical approach is taken. This method allows the implant to be placed at the same time as the sinus graft. If there is not enough bone, a lateral approach sinus graft will occur. This procedure must be done and healed completely before implant placement most of the time. Sinus augmentation is such a great advancement for those that thought they would never be a candidate for implants to replace their upper teeth.

Vertical Sinus Augmentation

Vertical Sinus Augmentation Procedure As in any other dental procedure, our board certified Oral Surgeon will make sure that you are completely numb before beginning. A small incision is made in the gums where the implant is going to be placed. Then, a space will be prepared for the implant to be threaded into place. Before this happens, bone in placed in this site between the ridge of bone and the sinus membrane. Now the implant can be inserted into its final location in the upper jaw. The site is finally closed and secured with sutures to start the healing process. Typically, this will need to heal for about 6-9 months before the general dentist will place a tooth on the implant.

Lateral Sinus Augmentation

Lateral Sinus Augmentation Procedure Once the doctor has made sure that you are completely numb, a small incision is made between the premolar and molar area near above the roots of the tooth. Next, a small opening is made in the bone to allow the surgeon to have access into the sinus cavity. The membrane which lines the inside of the sinus cavity is gently elevated, and bone graft material is placed underneath the membrane. Once the adequate amount of bone is there, sutures are placed to close the area and start the healing process. This procedure can be completed in about 30 minutes. Once finished, it will take about 6-9 months for this to heal as well as for the new bone in the sinus to mature.
